You cleanse your face. It feels tight. And the next thought is almost always the same: maybe I need another hydrating serum.
Before you add another bottle to the routine, it's worth looking one step earlier — at how you cleansed in the first place.

A few cleansing habits may be worth reviewing. Not because you're doing it wrong, but because three small things quietly make a difference.
Before You Add Another Serum, Check These 3 Things
1. Your water may be hotter than it needs to be
Hot water feels wonderful on a cold morning. It's also the easiest thing in your routine to adjust.
Hotter isn't cleaner. Every cleanser below calls for warm or lukewarm water — comfortable, not steaming. That's enough to rinse properly, and skin tends to feel better afterwards.
2. You may be scrubbing more than you need to
Cleansing doesn't get better with more pressure, faster rubbing, or washcloth friction. If anything, the opposite.
This matters most when you're trying to shift stubborn makeup or sunscreen. The instinct is to scrub harder. The better move is to use something designed to dissolve it, then let that product do the work.
Let the cleanser do the work.
3. You may not be using your cleanser the way it was designed
This is the big one, and the easiest to miss — because different cleansers genuinely want to be used differently. Applying them all the same way defeats the point of buying different formulations. Three examples below.
Why Start With an Oil Cleanser?
RIMAN ICD Moisture Cleansing Oil — $37.30 · 145 ml
Makeup, sunscreen and excess sebum are oil-based, and oil dissolves oil. That's the entire reason this step exists — and why it reduces the temptation to scrub at stubborn SPF.
The formula is 75% natural oils — black cumin seed, Berryflux Vita from raspberry, jojoba, sweet almond, meadowfoam and sunflower — designed to remove oil-based buildup while leaving skin feeling moisturized after rinsing.
The directions, which matter more than they look:
- Pump 3 to 4 times into dry palms
- Spread lightly over a dry face to dissolve makeup and sunscreen
- Wet your hands with warm water and work it over your face for about 20 seconds, until the oil turns milky
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water
The part people get wrong: an oil cleanser starts on dry skin. Applied to a soaking-wet face, it can't do the job it was designed for. Adding water comes later — that's what turns the oil milky and lets it rinse away cleanly.

When Does Snow Enzyme Cleanser Fit In?
RIMAN Incellderm Snow Enzyme Cleanser EX — $30.04 · 120 g
This is the complementary second step, not an alternative to the oil. A rich cream cleanser that foams into a light, snow-like texture, with soapberry and coconut-derived cleansing ingredients, a hyaluronic acid complex, and jojoba and meadowfoam oils.
Its papain and bromelain enzymes — from papaya and pineapple — gently lift away dead surface cells. It completed a Sensitive (Derma) Skin Test and an Eye Irritation Test.
Its directions are genuinely different from the oil's:
- Dispense a nickel-size amount onto clean, dry hands
- Apply evenly on a dry face, then wait until the enzymes take on a foamy consistency
- Wet your hands with water and gently massage your face
- Rinse completely with warm water
Notice step two. You apply it and wait — the foaming happens on your skin, not in your hands. Lathering it up at the sink first skips the part you paid for.

Prefer a Gel? The Other Second Cleanse
RIMAN ICD Balancing Gel Cleanser — $30.04 · 120 g
Not everyone wants a creamy cleanser. The gel is the lighter alternative second cleanse — a fresh, lightweight gel with a subtle lather, built on Giant BYoungPool™ P100 with gypsophila root extract and hyaluronic acid.
You'd use this or the Snow Enzyme Cleanser, not both. Creamy and cushioned, or fresh and light — that's the whole decision.
And here's the detail that makes the point of this entire article:
- Wet your face with lukewarm water
- Apply a small amount to your hands
- Gently massage onto the skin in circular motions
- Rinse thoroughly
This one starts on a wet face. The other two start dry.
Three cleansers from the same brand, three different starting conditions — and using any of them the way you'd use the others gets you a worse cleanse than the product is capable of. That's why it's worth reading the back of the bottle once.

Do You Always Need to Double Cleanse?
Not necessarily.
Double cleansing earns its place when you're removing sunscreen, makeup or heavier buildup — which for most people means evenings. On a day you wore neither, one gentle cleanse is plenty.
More cleansing isn't automatically better. The goal is clean, comfortable skin — not the squeakiest possible skin.
What Should Clean Skin Feel Like?
There's no universal answer, but most people prefer skin that feels clean, fresh and comfortable — no longer coated in makeup or sunscreen, and not uncomfortable either.
A persistently tight feeling isn't a diagnosis of anything. It's just a useful signal that something in the routine is worth a second look — product amount, water temperature, pressure, frequency, or whether every step is necessary that night.
A Note on Mature Skin
Skin can become more prone to dryness over time, and aggressive cleansing shows up faster than it once did. That doesn't mean every mature complexion is dry.
Mature skin doesn't necessarily need more cleansing. It may just need more intentional cleansing.
The Short Version
Before adding another serum because your face feels tight after washing:
- Turn the water temperature down.
- Ease up on the scrubbing.
- Follow your cleanser's actual directions — they differ by product for a reason.
And remember which product does what:
First cleanse — RIMAN ICD Moisture Cleansing Oil, on dry skin.
Second cleanse — RIMAN Incellderm Snow Enzyme Cleanser EX, applied to a dry face and left to foam, or the RIMAN ICD Balancing Gel Cleanser on a wet one.
None of this guarantees comfortable skin — plenty of other things affect that. But it's worth reviewing before you simply add more hydration products on top.
